Bone degradation at five Arctic archaeological sites: Quantifying the importance of burial environment and bone characteristics

چکیده
Abstract The degradation of archaeological bones is influenced by many variables. bone material itself a composite both organic and inorganic components, their depends on processes occurring before after burial, intrinsic characteristics as well extrinsic environmental parameters. In this study we attempt to quantify the effect some variables using novel approach that includes detailed monitoring burial environment combined with respirometry studies from five sites in West Greenland. First, compare state preservation excavated current including soil pH, thawing degree days, porosity moisture. Secondly, investigate oxic collected samples through effects temperature moisture oxidation rate individual bones. Finally, discuss how Some main conclusions are: 1) There significant correlation between 2) measured increases average fourfold 10 °C, more than hundred-fold when dry are soaked water. 3) different varies over two orders magnitude due such content 4) median wet at 15 °C corresponds yearly loss 3.8% mean content, while for 75% RH 0.02%. 5) Respirometry promising tool quantitative bone, but needed order obtain better understanding involved.

The Role of Bone Marrow Aspiration and Bone Marrow Biopsy in Diagnosis of Bone Marrow Metastases
Background: Bone marrow is the site of many malignant disorders and it is one of the common places for solid tumors to metastasize. Examination of the bone marrow aspirate and biopsy is a routine procedure performed for assessment of various conditions such as cytopenias, hematologic neoplasms, nonmalignant disorders and metastatic neoplasms. Methods: The patients were referred to the Hema...
متن کاملBone‐formers and bone‐losers in an archaeological population
OBJECTIVES Recent biomedical research suggests that, in modern human populations, individuals may vary in their inherent tendency toward bone formation at skeletal and extra-skeletal locations. However, the nature of this phenomenon is incompletely understood, and the extent to which it might apply to past populations is unclear. It is hypothesized that if there is inter-individual variation in...
متن کاملMorbidity at bone graft donor sites.
A review of the medical records of 239 patients with 243 autogenous bone grafts was undertaken to document the morbidity at the donor sites. The overall major complication rate was 8.6%. Major complications included infection (2.5%), prolonged wound drainage (0.8%), large hematomas (3.3%), reoperation (3.8%), pain greater than 6 months (2.5%), sensory loss (1.2%), and unsightly scars. Minor com...
متن کاملProteomic profiling of archaeological human bone
Ancient protein analysis provides clues to human life and diseases from ancient times. Here, we performed shotgun proteomics of human archeological bones for the first time, using rib bones from the Hitotsubashi site (AD 1657-1683) in Tokyo, called Edo in ancient times. The output data obtained were analysed using Gene Ontology and label-free quantification. We detected leucocyte-derived protei...
متن کاملFeral swine disturbance at important archaeological sites.
Feral swine are well known as environmentally destructive invasive animals in many areas around the world, where they degrade native habitats, harm rare plant and animal species, damage agricultural interests, and spread disease. We provide the first quantification of their potential as agents of disturbance at archaeological sites. Our study was conducted in south-central Florida at Avon Park ...
